I'm looking at you, GameCube-intended Super Paper Mario. It's more egregious when one switches a game intended for traditional controls but shoehorns them in with less regard with the new controls. Another thing is that while some may not like that this version game was given GameCube controller support (symbol not on the box but in the Instruction Booklet) yet not Classic Controller support (in regards with the Wii U), at least the developers had bothered giving a traditional control scheme (not to mention that works well) for the game.

I would like to explain a bit more, but it primarily consists of the presentation, a lack of the usual "boost" mechanic that the previous game had, and how the tricks are performed (although the last one makes sense with how the gravity mechanics work). One of the bigger issues I have with the game is that the sense of speed feels less prevalent in this game. With that said, the game does feel like a satisfactory sequel, albeit not perfect. Another change is that the game does is that before starting the story mode, the tutorial is made upfront and interactive, rather than the easily overlooked tutorial video in the predecessor. The latter change I'm personally not the biggest fan of. Old mechanics are also revised and/or simplified, such as the grinding having much longer jumps and automatically landing on rails, to tricks now being automatic and based on speed and which direction your holding when making the trick (don't be stale with the directions). The gameplay centers around a mix of mechanics from the previous game, but with new mechanics implemented into the game as well to give the game its own identity. Well, two improve, one goes a step backwards.

Plus, I prefer this story as it feels more like a little adventure, plus the Babylon Rogues are a little more likable. The story is just as short as its predecessor, but that's fine when you consider the time this game was being developed. This post was originally written by the author for TSSZ News.Gee, what a game! In this sequel to Sonic Riders, Team Sonic and the Babylon Rogues get caught in a little adventure centered around mysterious stones with the power to control gravity. They gave Sonic Unleashed Wii version a 7.2/10 and the PS2 version a 7.0/10. But the developer’s insistence on avoiding a pure hedgehog experience at all costs has once again backfired, transforming a speedy beauty into a slow beast. Indeed, had Unleashed shipped with a focus on polished daytime levels, I have no doubt that it would’ve been one of the best entrants in the franchise’s long history. It’s a shame, too, because this time more than any other, Sonic Team nearly had it. They feel as if diehard Sonic fans can just purchase the game for it’s daytime stages. They don’t explain much on the static hub world though, however, they complement the game by its responsive controls and good technology. It goes on and on, the only differences the change in backgrounds even the enemies remain mostly the same. They feel as if the levels just repeat themselves over and over again.Įnter area, break open some crates and barrels, come into a clearing and fight some enemies, jump across a couple of platforms and repeat. Thankfully, this title supports Classic/GameCube controllers. You earn ratings and medals based on how well you play - how many rings you collect and how much time elapses before you reach the goal - and if you perform poorly the first time through, as you might, you can come back again and try for a better score.įor some reason why they didn’t enjoy the Werehog too much was because of some of the ridiculous controls. The daytime levels scream by, but Sonic Team and Dimps have devised methods to keep you coming back for more.

The question is, how much are you willing to put up with to play the undeniably great daytime levels?Īs you can already guess, IGN doesn’t enjoy the nighttime stages nearly as much as they did the daytime stages. If the concept sounds a little forced, it is, but not nearly as forced and altogether boring as the repetitive selection of nighttime stages. Unfortunately, fantastic, yes, but unfortunately Sonic Unleashed has a darker side, literally, and I’m referring specifically to the well-publicized night-set levels in which the speedy hero transforms into a slow, stretchy werehog. Today, IGN reviewed the Wii and PS2 versions of Sonic Unleashed, and comparing this game’s score with other recent Sonic games, this one is among the best. With Sonic Unleashed now in store shelves (at least the Wii/PS2 versions) we can expect much more reviews coming our way. Titans Creed (Project Phoenix Productions).
